Agricultural Cooperative Winery of Tyrnavos
Griechenland - Thessalia
The Agricultural Cooperative Winery of Tyrnavos was established in 1961 by vine-growers at the area of Tyrnavos in Thessaly with the intention to manage and exploit their own rich grape production as well as to bottle the produced wine. Moreover, in 1989, the Association started the production and bottling of the famous Tsipouro of Tyrnavos (PGI grape marc spirit), which nowdays plays an important role in the overall turnover of the Winery as in the whole area too.
The A.C.W. of Tyrnavos has about 500 members and harvests every year more than 11 millions kgs of grapes cultivated only by them. Lots of greek grape varieties are collected every year such as Roditis, Badiki, Limniona, Debina, as well as "international" varieties such as Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon, ugni Blanc, Maccabeu, Chardonnay, Grenache blanche etc. Thus, the predominant variety, famous in the area for having revolutionary results in winemaking and distilling, is the Muscat of Hamburg. In Greece, it is cultivated mainly in the area of Tyrnavos in such an intense and results in such remarkably high-quality-quantity grapes ,that now it is only called with the synonyme "black Muscat of Tyrnavos". This aromatic grape variety, gives a wide range of wines produced by the A.C.W.T. e.g. white, red, rose, retsina, dry, semi-sweet and sweet, many of them officially recognized as PGI Tyrnavos.
The facilities of the Association have all the equipment needed to produce quality products, from crashing-grape machines, pneumatic presses, refrigerator-tanks, filters and coolers to bottling and packaging equipment of all kind of bottles and capacities. There is also a section for the production of concentrated must and rectified concentrated must used in winemaking, pastry etc.
The second factory of The Cooperation, is a distillery producing the famous PGI-Tsipouro of Tyrnavos, greek Ouzo, aged Tsipouro, spirit with saffron etc. High-tech steam-stills can operate multiple discontinuous distillation, under the supervision of experienced personnel. High quality spirits are produced while fully express the varietal potential of black Muscat of Tyrnavos.
The continuous inspection of all the vines, by our expertised Agronomists and the control, monitoring, handling and design of the productive process, managed by the scientific personnel in the fully equiped enological laboratory of the ACWT, can only result in exceptional quality products with devotion to local vine tradition.
